4 Color Coded Wii Grips $12.99 Shipped

The Story

I've been playing the new Super Mario Bros for Wii for a while now, and found the Wii-Remote is totally not design for you to use horizontally. Every time after about 30 mins of continuous play, my wrist and thumb starts to hurt, and my wife also complains that’s the reason why her character dies more often. So I got the after market Grip to resolve the problem. But honestly, the Grip won’t help you play the game any better, your Mario will still die only because you suck, and it has nothing to do with the Grip.

Chrome OS Tailored for Dell Mini 10v

The Story
The guys of the Dell Linux division have wowed the community by building and releasing their own revision of Chromium OS tailored for the Dell Mini 10v. After seeing Engadget running Chrome OS on a Vostro system, they tried fiddling with the build themselves to get it up and running on a Dell Mini 10v and succeeded. This OS relies 100% on the cloud, local storage is just used to speed up the system, everything is store in Google Docs, Picase, Gmail...

The Chrome OS build for the Dell Mini 10v can be downloaded here and Instructron from here.

Girls can call it BFF (Best Friend Forever)

The Story
My wife sent me a link today for a Casio Point and Shoot camera event in Taiwan, its basically promoting the camera’s “Makeup Function”, which of course means to make the girls look like they have great makeup on in every photo. According to the product description, it uses the facial recognition function to make the skin look smoother and can soften the shadows caused by sunlight.

It’s a little irritating to hear her raving about a little P&S after I just spent a grip on the Canon 7D as her early Christmas gift. However, she did point out one undeniable fact…

Milky Way Time-Lapse Video done by SLR

The Story
Friends invited me for a trip for Milky Way. We went to Joshua Tree National Park on 10/17/2009. Away from city light with New Moon on that night leave us a clear sky perfect for Milky Way shooting. That was the first time I try to shoot time-lapse with SLR camera as well. Lets look at the result below.

Milky Way Time-Lapse Video

What I did
Manual Focus was set to infinity.
Make sure the camera sit on a firm tripod
Shutter speed set to 30 sec with f2.5
ISO set to 1250
Let the camera shoot continues for 3hrs

What to improve next time
Get the timer remote cable. (My cable didn't arrive on time, I just shot the shutter pins)
Check focus in detail with test shots.
Push ISO even higher, possible 2500
reduce shutter speed to 15 sec to avoid the star trails on each shot.

My first Time-Lapse video by Canon S90

The Story
I always want to create a Time-Lapse video. However, using DSLR to make time-lapse will shorten the life of the shutter. So, a point and shoot camera with full manual control should able to handle the job at lower cost.

Time-Lapse Video

This is my first try of time-lapse video. Any suggestions will help me improve. Please leave as comments. Thanks in advance. If you haven't get this great camera yet. You can get it here for $429 and they ready to ship.

The Reason

The Solution
To Make it simple, you can click the link here and you should see similar as below on your right hand side.

Spend a thousand dollor for Tele Lens?

The Story
Friend wanted to buy Canon EF300mm f4/L for wild life photos and asked me if I can find good deal for him. I searched around and found it costs over $1000. Wow! After I asked him few questions and showed him the example below. He changed his mind and got a $100 Tamron 70-300mm instead

Sample from my Tamron
Click the image to see the original.

Q&A as follow

Me: How often do you take wild life photos?
Friend: Few times a year

Me: Are you going to shoot at day time or night time?
Friend: Mostly, Sunny day time.

Me: Do you really wanna spend a $1000 for a lens while you only use it a few time a year?
Friend: No, and lower quality is acceptable for cheaper solution.

The Reason He Picked Tamron
Every Lens should have acceptable sharpness while you are shooting at aperture f8. The cat you see above was shot with the Tamron at 300mm, aperture f8, 1/320sec with ISO800 while I think the image is acceptable. You will see the noise of the photo is pretty high since the little kitten is under the shade of my wife's car and I push my Canon XTi to ISO 800 to maintain the exposure. While you are shooting telephoto. In order to reduce hand shake, make sure you shoot with faster shutter speed. Only 3 rules apply, if the condition allow you to do so, you don't need a $1000 Lens to get good photos.

1, Shoot at f8 to get sharp image
2, Shoot at fast shutter speed to reduce hand shake
3, Push ISO to maintain good exposure.

p.s. Canon L telephoto lens will be able to help you get good images while you are in difficult situations. Such as when you need fast focus, shooting at low light or require f4 while still maintaining sharpness. Buy one if you can afford it. :)

Great XSi Deal after "Instant" Rebate

Friend ask me how to get the rebate from Canon I talk about 2 - 3 weeks ago. Because they thought is mail in rebate.

Actually those are instant rebates.

Let me put great deal as an example for XSi + EF-s 18-55mm + 55-250mm

First add the following items to your Amazon shopping cart

Canon XSi with EF-s 18-55mm Kit Lens

Canon EF 55-250mm IS

When you try to check out, you will see the following at the checkout page.

Final price

Nice! Camera with 2 Lens for $753.91 Shipped
Please remember to select free shipping

my 2 cents

If I want Canon SLR, which one should I get?

The story
People ask me what Canon SLR camera they should get. Actually Each Canon model has its own market, some of the features you may only find in the professional cameras. Depends on what you are looking for and your subject. You can pick from the followings

Consumer Camera

Canon XS, XSi and T1i are consider as consume camera (low-end), usually they are around $500 - $800 price range. They are lightweight with plastic housing and basic SLR features. Don't get me wrong, they are all able to produce good images. The function they are missing are for the professional to handle extreme conditions. Such as low light, situation that is not allowed use flash or require very high shutter speed to freeze fast moving object.

Advanced Amateur Cameras

Canon 40D and 50D are considered Advanced amateur cameras which come with magnesium alloy body with advance feature which allow you to get more creative photos and able to handle some extreme lighting conditions. If you are a beginner and able to afford a $900 to $1200 camera, I would suggest you skip the low-end one.

Professional Cameras

All the 1 series are considered to be professional cameras, while the 5D Mark II is considered semi-pro. These cameras are very reliable with alloy bodies while all the 1 series come with weatherproof protection. Their auto focus system is extremely rapid and more accurate than those lower end models. These camera usually have full complement of both manual and automatic controls. However, the are big, heavy and they are all missing build in flash (If you can afford $2000+ camera, you should able to afford a external flash).

You may click on the camera images to check out the latest pricing from Amazon.

A Photographer's Compact Point and Shoot

The Story
I saw a well known gadget review website rated Ricoh CX1 as a Photographer's Compact Point and Shoot. I don't have experience with this camera but I disagree with that.

The Reason
I believe a real photographer who will pick a point and shoot camera may only have a few reasons. Following is what I can think.

  • Similar image quality as DSLR.

  • Able to Shoot at RAW format

  • High Quality Lens

  • Compact and easy to carry around

  • Ricoh CX1 has a small 1/2.3" sensor which is similar as those cheap point and shoot camera. It doesn't allow user to shoot at RAW formant which normal photographers would like to have for post processing. It has a 7.1x optical zoom lens which possibly reduces image quality when the light has to travel though so many optics.

    What I think are good?

The following cameras only serve the same purpose - produce good image quality and they all meet the requirements above.

    Panasonic LX3 / Leica D-Lux4

    Sigma DP1 / DP2

    Canon Powershot G10

If you really like the brand Ricoh, Following are the much better choices
Ricoh Caplio GX200 / GR Digital II

Just click on the images if you want to get more info on the cameras or buy the cameras.

Great Night Shot with Star Effect

    The Story
Friends ask me how to get great night shot with a SLR.

    The Solution
I think most people know a tripod will be the great helper in this kind of situation. A tripod allows user to shoot at slower shutter speed with a clean shot. I would like to add something more on top of this - A Star Effect.

Lets take a look with the following example.

How to get a star effect
The example above has not been photoshoped, what you see is what I shoot at that moment. You see the lights become a beautiful stars and make the photo get the WOW effect which can be done very easily. A small aperture can make the bright light source become star shape. I use f/29 with 15sec for this shot. Usually, f/11 or smaller f-stop should be good enough to get the star effect.

If you like this photo, you can download the original file here.

    First Turkey in My Life

    The Story
I know this is kinda off topic, but I am so happy to share this. I just joined a bowling league and today was the first day of the game. I am not good at bowling and I got pretty low scores (under 100) for the first two games:(

On the third game, I was lucky and got a strike on the 3rd round. I am so happy about this and I try to duplicate the same way to throw the ball again. Yup... that's right, I got the second strike. My team member handed over a beer to me and I finish half of the bottle. Now the next roll, focus, focus, and focus... Yeah! I got a turkey!

p.s. The turkey photo is not taken by me, credit go to a Flickr user.
